Performing in a Christmas Concert
Lesson 017
DATES (Dec. 12-15, 2011)
Lessons © www.musictechteacher.com
Each Music Technology student in the 2nd - 5th grades will receive one 30-45 minute lesson per week. The class structure is ‘work-at-your-own-pace’ because students are not required to have any materials or music equipment to participate.
Essential Question: What can you do during the Christmas holidays to continue learning about music outside of school time?
Objective:
Students will be able to work together to perform music in an ensemble for a concert performance.
Standards:
National MENC Standards:
(2) Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

TI:ME Technology Strategies:
(2) Music Production

Materials:
Concert music selections (Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Carol of the Bells, Jingle Bells, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Lean On Me, Ode to Joy). Music keyboards, speaker system, microphones, school uniforms and cummerbunds and bowties, keyboard stands.
Procedures:
1) This is concert week. Regular classes will not meet around concert time due to moving the lab equipment to the gym. Students in the Music Tech Ensemble will have rehearsals in the Music Tech Lab and in the Gym to prepare for our Christmas program on Dec. 13, 2011. It takes about 4 hours to move the equipment and setup the gym and 3-4 hours to move the equipment back and reconnect the lab.

The teacher will move all of the equipment and have all music ready for the students to rehearse together. The speaker system and microphones need to be ready, along with all cables, extension cords, line/stereo cables and keyboard stands need to be assembled and ready.

(Review) The full group will play all songs except for Carol of the Bells and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Students should be able to play all of the notes correctly by now and are able to change the sounds and rhythms on the keyboards without assistance from the teacher. Students playing on Carol of the Bells should be able to play all rhythms accurately and be alert in the performance to know when to complete the song. The quartet of students playing on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen will need to rehearse with additional practices to complete the song (quite advanced level for these students).  There will be four rehearsals of 30-40 minutes each and one rehearsal in the gym.
Notes should be sent home to parents reminding them of the program and the uniform for students.
2) Students should be reminded that they can continue working on music quizzes, worksheets and lessons on our website during the Christmas holidays if they have Internet access. They may also use their Noteflight accounts to write music without the need for a musical keyboard connection. (www.noteflight.com) The teacher can monitor, copy and respond to student work as they complete it from Noteflight.
Evaluation:
Students successfully perform the Christmas music selections on the music keyboards in the gym (2 programs).
Videos will be made of the performances and will be posted on www.musictechteacher.com.
