Part 1-
Explanation of Hot Potatoes Software
- Authoring tool
- Interactive quizzes for web sites created by the Research and Development Team at the University of Victoria Humanities Computing and Media Centre. The quizzes are made using JavaScript and HTML, computer programming for web pages.
- Multiple Choice, Short Answer, Word Jumble, Crossword, Matching, Fill-in-the-Blank Quizzes
- Requirements to run Hot Potatoes
- Setup and registration

- Hot Potatoes.net -Fee based service to track student use / grades

Part 2 - Resource CD for each Teacher
- Description of contents of your resource CD
- Description of quiz files listed on resource CD
- Create an Index page in Word for your Quizzes Main Page
- Enter the quiz names.
- Save the file as a web page (index.htm)
- JBC Quiz - Multiple Choice (Instruments or Jazz Musicians Quizzes 1 or 1B)
- Enter questions and answers
- Setup configuration of quiz (shuffle / order of questions)
- Save the file in your quizzes folder
- Save as a web page for version 5 browsers
- Test your quiz (Internet Explorer)
- In Hot Potatoes, export the file for printing
- Open Word, press Edit and Paste. Print list of questions and answers.
- Open the folder with the files and quiz data to identify files used in quizzes.
- Insert a picture into the quiz. Explain <br> or break, an HTML term to have a line break between the question and picture.
- Demonstrate Feedback in questions
- Save, then view quiz output in browser.
Part 3 - JQuiz - Short Answer Quiz (Quiz 2)
- Enter questions and all applicable answers to each question.
- Check Configuration. 'Go to Contents' button should be listed as 'index.htm'.
- Save quiz, save as a web page, preview in browser.
- To Print quiz from Hot Potatoes, click File and Export to Print. Open Word. Click Edit and Paste. Print quiz.
Part 4 - JMix - Jumbled Sentence Quiz (Quiz 3)
- Type sentence in left column, answers and variations in right column.
- Check Configuration. 'Go to Contents' button should be listed as 'index.htm'.
- Save quiz, save as a web page, preview in browser.
Part 5 - JMix - Jumbled Word / Sentence Quiz (Quiz 4)
- Type word in left column.
- Check Configuration. 'Go to Contents' button should be listed as 'index.htm'.
- Save quiz, save as a web page, preview in browser.
Part 6 - JCross - Crossword Puzzle (Quiz 5)
- Click Manage Grid. Type each word for the crossword in the box. Click Make Grid. Crossword is generated.
- Click Add Clues to type clue for each word. Click on a word. Type the clue and press OK.
- Continue for each word until completed.
- Save quiz, save as a web page (v5 browser), preview quiz in browser.
- To Print quiz from Hot Potatoes, click File and Export to Print. Open Word. Click Edit and Paste. Print quiz.
Part 7 - JMatch - Matching Quiz (Quiz 6)
- Type items on the right that will 'shuffle' to a different order each time.
- Type items on the left that will stay in the same order each time.
-- Inserted pictures or sounds can be used on either side also.
-- Name file in Alternate title box.
- Check configuration information.
- Save quiz, save as a web page (Drag and Drop for v5 browser) to drag item to matching item on a page.
- Preview quiz in browser.
Part 8 - JCloze - Music Fill-in-the-Blanks (Quiz 7)
- Type the text of the sentences / paragraph for the lesson.
- Highlight word to 'gap' (create space) and type in clue if needed.
- Do this for each highlighted word.
- Type alternate answers if any apply.
- If needed, highlight a word and press Show Words to review or change the clues and alternate answers.
- Save quiz, save as a web page (v5 browser), preview quiz in browser.
The www.musictechteacher.com site features many quizzes in Hot Potatoes format, as well as other types of quizzes (Flash, Java, JavaScript, etc.) available for viewing.
